Wild Penguin Natural Reserver

The Foxy Beach and Boulders Beach at Cape Town are widely acknowledged as the best spots for penguin watching, with more than 300,000 tourists visiting the area on a yearly basis.
The size of the penguin colony in this area is approximately 3,000. The local residents refer to this mini kingdom of penguins as "Tuxedo Junction", due to the resemblance of these birds' appearance to the formal apparel.

Though classified as a vulnerable species, the population of African Penguins at Boulders Beach has grown from two breeding pairs in 1984 to about 3,000 in recent years, partly due to the reduction in commercial pelagic trawling in False Bay. This in turn increased the supply of pilchards and anchovy, which form part of the penguins' diet. As their bray sounds like the call of donkey, they were previously known as jackass penguin. The African Penguin is approximately 68~70 cm in height.

Penguins usually prefer to inhabit islands without humans. However, the same can't be said of penguins at the Boulders Beach. The penguins here love to play with tourists and are known to be particularly interested in human's crotch. Please beware of the penguins' surprise attack when you are there.

The penguin is an aquatic bird that dates back approximately 60 million years. Certain species of prehistoric penguins attained enormous sizes, becoming as heavy as 100 kg. After millions of years of evolution, the penguins are now flightless aquatic birds. There are 18 living species of penguin around the world presently, namely Emperor Penguin, King Penguin, Adelie Penguin, Chinstrap Penguin, Gentoo Penguin, Rockhopper penguin, Macaroni Penguin, Yellow-eyed Penguin, Magellanic Penguin, Royal Penguin, Fairy Penguin, Snares Islands Penguin, Erect-crested Penguin, Fiordland Crested Penguin, Humboldt Penguin, Galapagos Penguin, White-flippered Penguin and the African Penguin (also known as the Jackass Penguin or Black-footed Penguin).

The penguin has short wings that have evolved into flippers, which are useless for flight in the air but suited for swimming. Penguin has smooth plumage that covers the entire body along with ample amount of hypodermic fat that helps the bird to withstand the harsh coldness of the Antarctic region. Penguins are counter shaded in black and white as camouflage; their colors make them hard to notice for predators in the air and underwater. On average, penguins can swim seven kilometers in an hour. These birds breed all year round and both male and female penguins share incubation duties.
